The recently Xinjiang riots have been a very hot topic in the media. Both Han and Uighur ethnic groups claiming to be in the right and that the other side did wrong. It is thought to have been ignited by an incident at Shaoguan, Guangdong province.
Racial conflict is always a complecated issue in whichever country. The dilemma is always based on a background of historical and current concerns. It will create lots of troubles if not handled properly. Normally people from different ethnic groups are able to live in a harmony unless an evil hand pulls the strings from behind the scene. Media reports of a girl in a factory inadvertently entering an Uighurs' dormitory. She immediately screamed due to the fear she felt when she was teased. When her other fellow colleagues heard that, they thought she was being raped. They overreacted without waiting to find out the truth. Two Uighors were killed on the spot. I believe the company's chief was negligent and failed to do a proper job. They should educate their staff to abide the law. Even if she was raped, they should report to the police rather than settle this by themselves. Let the police take control. If police fails to control the fighting, and worse comes to worse, somebody gets killed, these people should be jailed.
Because the Guangdong Government did not do a proper job, the news spreaded to Xinjiang where Uighurs live. (news spreads rapidly now, since we have internet, phone etc) First, students started demostrations, later joined by others. If Xinjiang Govt responded fast enough, explained in detail the true situation, promised the criminals would be punished, those evil people wouldn't have their chance. The civilians wouldn't be exploited. But with no one there to offer a listening ear, they would be forced to settle themselves. This is a very painful lesson. It takes long time to heal the wound.
